Spark in the Park is lit but dims student productivity

Fun Facts

Ever wondered what happens behind the scenes of Spark in the Park or what it takes to uphold the annual tradition?

• First, there is a Spark Committee; the seven individuals are Joy Vergara the director of CSI, three members from SAB, and three members from UIC Radio. Tyler Portis is one of the three members representing SAB in the Spark Committee.

• Then, the survey is sent out through the Spark in the Park, UIC Class of 2019, UIC Class of 2020 Facebook pages for student input. The link is connected through OrgSync, so only users with a valid UIC net-id and password can contribute. The UIC Class of 2019 and 2020 Facebook pages were created by the Admissions office; however, an official page was never created for members of previous graduating years.

• With the surveys completed, Vergara hires a contractor and shares the survey results with him/her. The contractor’s job is to negotiate with the potential artists’ agents. The contractor comes back with multiple proposals; having multiple proposals will allow UIC to have a back-up plan if anything comes up. Vergara makes the ultimate decision using the information from the contractor, budget, and artists’ availability. If she approves of a proposal, the contractor will reach out to the artists’ agent, and come up with the logistical details.

• Last but not least, Spark in the Park takes place with the said artist as the headliner; the winners of Battle of the DJs and Battle of the Bands will perform as well.
