Everything concerning internships at UIC from who to contact to where to go.
CHICAGO, ILL. October 9, 2016 – The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), a public research institution located at the heart of its city with a variety of majors to cater to all interest parties, has internships for all. Linda Landis Andrews and Robin Hursey provide guidance to UIC students as they prepare for post-graduation careers.
From a student’s specific interest of study to hands-on career exploration or work experience, Andrews and Hursey are here to help. Although Andrews and Hursey offer assistance with internship searches, both women have different roles at UIC. Andrews teaches a semester-long internship course and works for the English department. Hursey, on the other hand, works for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS); she helps all majors.
Andrews, whose office is located at University Hall (UH) 1929, said internships are important because “it shows that you have stepped off campus and know how to navigate in the world of professional work. An internship provides the necessary link between college and career.” Her ENGL 493 weekly seminar course at UIC meets to lecture on writing for a professional audience as well as finding a job after graduation. Hursey, whose office is located at UH 521, explains how internships help “gain experience and access to the professional work world, prepare for the job market and make future connections. Benefits include: applying classroom lessons to reality, preparing for a career in a certain field, determining a career path, building a strong résumé, learning necessary skills, and knowing what to expect from a full-time job.” She recommends students begin their internship search the semester prior to desired start date. To earn graduation credit, have an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher, declare your major, and complete one internship per semester. You may also earn elective credit through the LAS 289 Internship course.
